For the first time, the World Health Organization has formally recommended GLP-1 drugs as part of long-term obesity treatment for adults.

Published Monday in JAMA, the new WHO guidelines mark a significant shift in the agency’s historical stance — moving from an emphasis on diet and physical activity alone to acknowledging obesity as a complex, chronic disease that may require medication as part of sustained treatment.
