Media Tip Sheet: World Bank Warns Global Economy is Headed for Worst Half-Decade in 30 Years

January 9, 2024

Steven Hamilton

The World Bank warned Tuesday that it expects the global economy to slow in 2024 and it appears to be headed for the slowest half-decade of GDP growth in 30 years. While the World Bank says the risk of a global recession has decreased, mounting geopolitical tensions are creating new concerns for the global economy.

If you would like more context on this matter, please consider Steven Hamilton, an Assistant Professor of Economics at The George Washington University. His primary area of research is public finance, where he studies the effects of taxes on behavior with a view to designing better tax policy. In recent research, he investigates the degree to which taxpayers should be allowed to claim tax deductions by measuring the extent to which taxpayers use deductions to avoid paying taxes. Hamilton has provided extensive economic commentary to the New York Times, the LA Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, The Atlantic, Slate, The Hill, the Sydney Morning Herald, and The Australian, among others.
