Media Tip Sheet: FDA Could Update Blood Donation Guidelines to Avoid Malaria Cases

In 2022, there were 249 million cases of Malaria, according to The World Health Organization. 

As U.S. residents travel out of the country this summer, the Food and Drug Administration is considering updating its blood donation guidelines to avoid additional cases. 

The requirement would make it mandatory for blood banks to use a test to detect parasites that cause malaria in donors.
