The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium will host a range of acts this fall, including comedian David Sedaris, Cuban singer and dancer Omara Portuondo and a group of Americana artists performing a benefit concert for refugees.
The venue’s upcoming shows have something for everyone, from world music enthusiasts to comedy fans. The acts represent Lisner’s commitment to bringing the world to D.C, and to introducing audiences to new groups and long-time favorites.
Mr. Sedaris comes to Lisner on Oct. 14. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Mr. Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. He is the author of “Barrel Fever” and “Holidays on Ice,” as well as collections of personal essays, “Naked,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim,” “When You Are Engulfed in Flames,” and his most recent book, “Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls,” all of which became immediate bestsellers.
Ms. Portuondo will perform on Oct. 17. The show will celebrate Ms. Portuondo’s 85th birthday and 70 years of performing professionally with a musical party featuring Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen and violinist Regina Carter. Ms. Portuondo will reflect on her career, taking the audience back to her younger years at the Buena Vista Social Club days through the present.
Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and the Milk Carton Kids will perform on Oct. 21. This hard-hitting Americana grouping will perform together in a “songwriters in the round” style show. This tour is produced in conjunction with Lampedusa: Concerts for Refugees to raise funds and awareness to help refugees heal and thrive in more than 45 countries.
