Media Tip Sheet: False Hope of the Dire Wolf De-Extinction

April 17, 2025

WASHINGTON (April 17, 2025)- Colossal Biosciences claim to have revived the extinct species of Dire Wolves with two pups, Romulus and Remus, according to TIME. De-extinction, the process of reviving previously extinct animals, has been growing in the science community for over a decade.

Critics worry this claim gives false hope.

For more context on the matter, please consider Kathy Hessler, assistant dean for animal law at George Washington Law School. Hessler has been teaching animal law for over two decades and serves as the inaugural dean for Animal Legal Education at the George Washington University Law School. Hessler currently serves on the board of the Center for Teaching Peace and is a fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics.

“The “dire wolf de-extinction” news is mostly mis-reported and will be used as an excuse not to protect endangered animals,” said Hessler.

GW Animal Law is hosting a  virtual webinar Making De-Extinction Extinct: Why Current Scientific Efforts to Bring Back Extinct Species Should Be Terminated on May 2, 2025 to address these issues.
