EVENT:
Concha Buika, a singer, songwriter, music producer, writer and poet based in Miami, follows in the tradition of select performers who have transcended with their voices, charisma and command of the stage—she is often compared to people like Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas and Cesária Évora. Her latest album “Vivir Sin Miedo” (“To Live Without Fear”) is a fusion of all the experiences, feelings, passions and rhythms that Buika has incorporated into her repertoire. Buika wrote nine of the 10 songs that make up the album, which is infused with elements of reggae, raga, flamenco, R&B, afrobeat and gospel. She will perform songs from the album, released last year, including the first single off the record, “Carry Your Own Weight,” featuring Jason Mraz. Buika’s D.C. performance will be followed by concerts in New York City, Chicago and Boston.

BACKGROUND:
Buika is a creative survivor, a poet, composer and music producer. She is hailed as a star in contemporary world music, jazz and flamenco. Buika has a remarkable voice: raw and smoky, but with a tenderness that hits right at the heart, vibrantly deploying her rich, sensual instrument, best described as “velvet gravel.” It has been said that “Buika combines all styles along with her emotionally charged lyrics and a broken sensuality in her voice.”
