The first day of summer is also the start of National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day.
It’s a day that encourages parents to ask a simple but life-saving question: Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?
Elizabeth Choma, clinical assistant professor at the George Washington University School of Nursing, is a pediatric nurse practitioner whose work focuses on firearm safety education in families.
She can discuss:
- How gun-related injuries are now the leading cause of death for children in the U.S.
- Why pediatricians and families must feel empowered to have the “ASK” conversation and how to do it.
- The role of schools, pediatricians, and policymakers in normalizing safe firearm storage.
- Tips for parents to navigate difficult but crucial safety questions before playdates, sleepovers, and outings.
