Media Tip Sheet: Supreme Court Takes Up Global Tariffs Case

November 5, 2025

WASHINGTON (November 5, 2025) – The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments this week in a high-stakes case challenging President Trump’s sweeping global tariffs. This decision could redefine the limits of presidential power over trade and will likely have major implications for markets and the broader economy. The case tests whether Trump’s use of a 1970s emergency law to impose tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada was lawful.

Two experts from the George Washington University are available for commentary:

Richard J. Pierce, Lyle T. Alverson Professor of Law, is a leading authority on administrative law and government regulation whose work has been cited in more than a dozen U.S. Supreme Court opinions.

Rodney Lake, Vice Dean and Director of the GW Investment Institute at the GW School of Business, can discuss how trade policy uncertainty affects markets, investor confidence, and business decision-making.
