Media Tip Sheet: World’s Largest Spider Web Discovered

November 10, 2025

WASHINGTON (November 10, 2025) – Researchers have discovered what may be the world’s largest spider web. The sprawling 1,140-square-foot network housing more than 111,000 spiders was found inside a pitch-black cave on the border of Albania and Greece.

Gustavo Hormiga, Ruth Weintraub Professor of Biology at the George Washington University, studies the systematics and evolutionary biology of spiders. His research explores how web architecture evolves and what it reveals about spider diversification and behavior. He can discuss how this discovery challenges long-held assumptions about spiders and what it suggests about the evolution of cooperative behavior among arachnids.
