The Science of Love, Vulnerability, and Valentine’s Day Expectations

February 12, 2026

From the pressure to be partnered to evolving ideas about intimacy and vulnerability, February 14 offers a window into how people experience love and loneliness.

Fallon Goodman, assistant professor of Clinical/Community Psychology, studies how people build social connection and resilience in the face of adversity. She can speak to the emotional impact of Valentine’s Day, why the holiday can intensify feelings of loneliness, and how people can approach dating and relationships with greater authenticity and emotional resilience. More about her research is available through the Emotion and Resilience Laboratory.

On the topic, Fallon said, “Valentine’s Day can intensify feelings of loneliness, especially for people who want a romantic relationship but find it difficult to put themselves out there. It’s also an opportunity to talk about how we can lean into the vulnerability that comes with dating and building real intimacy.”
