Media Tip Sheet: National Kidney Cancer Awareness Month

March 4, 2026

Kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in the United States, yet it often develops silently — with many patients diagnosed incidentally during imaging for unrelated issues. As rates continue to rise nationwide, physicians are urging greater awareness of risk factors, early warning signs and evolving treatment options.

Experts at George Washington University are available to discuss kidney cancer. If you would like to speak to a GW expert please email: katelyn [dot] deckelbaumatgwu [dot] edu (katelyn[dot]deckelbaum[at]gwu[dot]edu).

Michael Whalen is an associate professor of Urology and Director of Urologic Oncology at the George Washington School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Neil Mendhiratta is an assistant professor of Urology at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He specializes in the early detection and minimally-invasive treatment of all major urologic cancers.
