The Ukrainian military is scoring a series of victories in its ongoing counteroffensive in the northeastern part of the country. Russian forces are abandoning multiple key positions in the region that they had held for months. Although the Kremlin insists the fight will continue, Ukraine’s recent battlefield success is inspiring optimism in Kyiv and its western allies.
Robert Orttung, research professor of international affairs at the George Washington University, believes Ukraine’s recent successes on the battlefield could represent a turning point in the conflict and further undermines Russia’s global standing.
“While the war is far from over, Ukraine seems to be turning the tide and likely will restore control over its territory. The big question now is, what is the future of Russia? The country seems headed for inexorable decline and therefore will not make a good partner for China.”
