Julie Su, President Biden’s nominee for Secretary of Labor, goes before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions this morning. Her path to confirmation is riddled with obstacles. A few Democratic senators have yet to signal their support and she faces unanimous Republican opposition. Two years ago, Su was confirmed as Deputy Secretary of the Labor Department by a 50-47 vote, and any Democratic defections would likely doom her nomination to the department’s top post.
Casey Burgat, director of the Legislative Affairs master’s program at the GW Graduate School of Political Management, is an expert on the rules and procedures that govern Capitol Hill. He can explain the ins and outs of the Senate confirmation process and provide helpful context surrounding the hearing.
