The United States and its NATO allies suspended their participation in a key 1990 Cold War-era security treaty in Europe. According to The Wall Street Journal, the move marks “the demise of another landmark arms control agreement.” NATO’s decision to suspend participation in the treaty comes after Russia formally withdrew on Tuesday and amid complaints from the West that Russia wasn’t honoring the terms of the treaty.
Erwan Lagadec is an associate research professor at the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at the George Washington University, where he leads the Elliott School of International Affairs programs on EU and NATO affairs. He is the Director of IERES' European Union "Jean-Monnet" Center of Excellence; and he leads a Memorandum of Understanding between the Elliott School and NATO's Allied Command Transformation. He is an expert on the EU and NATO affairs and has taught classes on NATO’s strategic challenges and the Western responses to Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy. Lagadec’s research interests also include NATO projecting stability, sub-national transatlantic relations, and the politics of aid as well development aid and crisis management.
