A Conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

EVENT:

The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs is hosting a conversation with Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the former President of Liberia, and Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state and Nobel Peace Laureate.

During her tenure, President Sirleaf was instrumental in erasing Liberia’s entire debt, and she also established a right to free, universal primary education. She retired in 2017, ensuring the country’s first peaceful, democratic transition of power in 73 years in January 2018. Recognized as a global leader for women’s empowerment, President Sirleaf has dedicated her efforts to amplify the voice of women and girls in all spheres of life by increasing the representation of women in public service leadership roles in Africa.

This is the inaugural event in the Bridges Institute/Vivian Lowery Derryck Africa Lecture Series at GW. This event is made possible with the generous support and vision of Vivian Lowery Derryck, founder and president emerita of the Bridges Institute, a non-profit she launched in 2009 to help strengthen African governance and democracy. Bridges’ programs bring together continental Africans and the Diaspora to examine issues of governance, corruption, race, equity and women’s rights. Vivian is a member of the Elliott School Board of Advisors.
