EVENT:
The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs and the GW Institute for International Economic Policy is hosting a conversation with Richard R. Verma, who serves as the Deputy Secretary of State for Management & Resources, on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Deputy Secretary Verma will deliver a speech, followed by a moderated discussion with GW Elliott School of International Affairs Dean Alyssa Ayres. The discussion will focus on what role subnational governments must play in climate change, especially as it impacts local economies.
As the Deputy Secretary of State for Management & Resources, Verma acts as the Chief Operating Officer of the Department, and leads the Department’s efforts on modernization, foreign assistance, and a wide range of workforce and strategic issues. Deputy Secretary Verma previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to India, where he led one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions and championed historic progress in bilateral ties. He most recently served as Chief Legal Officer and Head of Global Public Policy for Mastercard, is a former partner at the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, and was the Vice Chairman of The Asia Group, a global consulting firm.
