Media Tip Sheet: IMF & World Bank Holding Annual Meetings in Africa This Week

October 10, 2023

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank kicked off their annual meetings Monday in Morocco. According to the Associated Press, it’s the first time in 50 years the IMF and World Bank have held its annual meetings in Africa “as they face a growing chorus of criticism that poorer nations are underrepresented at the two institutions.”

GW's Danny Leipziger

Danny Leipziger is a Professor of Practice of International Business and managing director of The Growth Dialogue at the George Washington University. Leipziger, a former vice president of the World Bank, headed the Bank’s Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network of more than 700 economists and other professionals working on economic policy formulation in the area of growth and poverty, debt, trade, gender and economic empowerment, and public sector management and governance. Leipziger’s areas of expertise include development economics, international economic policy, and macro and economic growth.

Leipziger says he sees a need for some basic reforms of both institutions (IMF and the World Bank) if they are to remain relevant and are to maintain global support. He can also discuss the developments to come out of this week’s meetings.
