WASHINGTON (October 10, 2023)-- The Hamas attack on Israel last weekend was so widespread that it sparked conversation of other countries’ involvement and support, according to CNN. Iran and Hamas have long been allies. However, on Tuesday Iran’s Khamenei said Tehran was not involved in the Hamas attack.

GW faculty experts are available to offer insight, commentary and analysis on the developments in Israel and Gaza. If you would like to schedule an interview, please contact GW Media Relations Specialists Shannon Mitchell at [email protected] and Cate Douglass at [email protected].

Sina Azodi is an expert on International Relations of the Middle East, Iranian Foreign Relations, U.S.-Iran relations and Iran’s nuclear program. His research interests further include international security.

On the particular topic, Professor Azodi has said “Iran’s support for Hamas is nothing new. For decades Hamas has enjoyed the support of Iran; but in the case of recent attacks, while Iranians hailed the attacks, they have denied any involvement. This is in line with Israeli officials’ claims that so far there hasn’t been any smoking guns connecting Iran to the attacks.”
