Media Tip Sheet: Pepco to Pay for Pollution in D.C.

WASHINGTON(October 4, 2023)—“The largest environmental settlement in D.C. history” happened Tuesday, October 3, 2023 according to D.C. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb. Pepco will pay upwards of $57 million dollars to D.C. after the electric company polluted(sometimes intentionally) the Anacostia River and other areas for decades by releasing toxic chemicals into groundwater. The settlement is broken down into $47 million in costs and $10 million in penalties. The funds will be used for river cleanup and contamination.
