Media Tip Sheet: Alaska’s 53rd Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

March 3, 2025

WASHINGTON (March 3, 2025)- This weekend kicked off the world’s most famous sled dog race, Iditarod, in Anchorage, Alaska. The 53rd annual race saw some of the lowest amount of snow in previous years, causing a need for a new trail,  increasing the original route by 100 miles, according to The Associated Press.

George Washington University Law School’s Assistant Dean for Animal Law, Kathy Hessler can speak on animal welfare as it relates to dog sledding and other animal sports.

Hessler has been teaching animal law for over two decades and serves as the inaugural dean for Animal Legal Education at the George Washington University Law School. Hessler currently serves on the board of the Center for Teaching Peace and is a fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics.
