The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service announced new guidance that expands access to the clean vehicle tax credits. Beginning January 1, 2024, people shopping for electric vehicles will be able to get a $7,500 federal tax credit off the sticker price while at the dealership, instead of having to wait to claim the credit on their tax return the next year.

GW Professor John Helveston

John Helveston is an assistant professor of engineering management and systems engineering at the George Washington University. Helveston is interested in understanding the factors that shape technological change, with a particular focus on transitioning to more sustainable and energy-saving technologies. Within this broader category, he studies consumer preferences and market demand for new technologies as well as relationships between innovation, industry structure, and technology policy. He has explored these themes in the context of China’s rapidly developing electric vehicle industry.

Helveston co-authored research in 2022 that found that electric vehicle buyers valued rebates more than tax credits. The study demonstrated that an immediate rebate at the point of sale would be more equitable and potentially more effective in broadening the buying market for electric vehicles.
