Media Tip Sheet: House Votes to Expel Rep. George Santos from Congress

With a vote of 311 to 114, the House has moved to expel Rep. George Santos following the release of an Ethics Committee report alleging an array of misconduct. The expulsion of Santos marks the sixth time in U.S. history, as well as the first within the past 20 years, that such a move has been made.

Casey Burgat, Legislative Affairs Program Director and Associate Professor at GW’s School of Political Management is an expert on Congressional capacity and reform. Jessica Tillipman, Associate Dean for Government Procurement Law Studies; Government Contracts Advisory Council Distinguished Professorial Lecturer in Government Contract Law, Practice & Policy at George Washington Law School is an expert on White Collar Crime. Tillipman is a Senior Editor of “The FCPA Blog” and has published numerous articles that address legal and policy issues involving anti-corruption, government procurement, white-collar crime, and government ethics law.

Peter Loge, director of GW’s School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA), has nearly 30 years of experience in politics and communications, having served senior positions for Sen. Edward Kennedy and three members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Loge currently leads the Project on Ethics in Political Communication at SMPA and continues to advise advocates and organizations. Loge says it’s a rare moment of Congress setting a minimum bar for behavior. 
Todd Belt, director of the Political Management master’s program at the GW Graduate School of Political Management, is an expert on the mass media, public opinion, the presidency, campaigns and elections. He can speak to the role the media has played in the expulsion of Santos as well as to the comfortability Americans currently have with the way the US Congress is operating, based on recently released findings of the annual GW Politics Poll.
